Why did you start Capoeira?
I first started capoeira after seeing some other people playing and fell in love with the movements and the game itself. I had seen some of the acrobatics and kicks before, but never had anything to associate them with. In the context of the game there was a rhythm and a strategy to it that I just had to try for myself.

Why do you like Capoeira?
Before I came to capoeira I had tried a number of different martial arts. Capoeira offered a broader cultural experience, including the music, movement, and the game itself. There’s also an excellent sense of community that helps to keep the mood high even when the training is tough and the technique demanding. Often, everyone in the class progressing in slightly different directions at once, and then helping each other to perfect difficult acrobatic movements and sequences. It’s that supportive environment that makes coming to train a positive experience no matter how hard it is.

Do you do any other sports?
I play tennis and football from time to time, but for the most part I’m not too into sports.

How often do you train?
I train twice a week in class and I try to train at least once or twice a week outside class to help improve my flexibility.

 What’s a typical session like?
A typical session opens with a warm-up, including some deep stretches to help with flexibility. After that, it differs from class to class. Some classes offer a lot of intense cardio, while others are slower-paced and focus on refining technique. Most classes end by giving students a chance to focus on improving particular movements they enjoy, followed by a roda (in which people both play the game and practice capoeira’s music and songs).

What’s your favorite thing about Capoeira?
My favourite thing about capoeira is when you see someone perform a nice movement or sequence of movements in a way that you’ve never considered possible before. Often, these are movements you already know, applied in ways you’d never have thought of.
The best thing about this is that you can then learn to do them yourself.
