Girassol talking little bit about capoeira

Why did you start Capoeira?
I visited a friend of mine in South Africa who played Capoeira and that’s where I first encountered it and became instantly curious. When I came back to Ireland, I couldn’t find any classes near me. It was only when I moved to Italy that I began training with a Cordao De Ouro group in Milan. Capoeira appealed to me so much because it is so different from other sports I knew at the time, it’s so interesting and fun with such a great range of movement.
 Why do you like Capoeira?
I it for the reasons just mentioned about – its such a great all round workout that leaves me feeling great, physically and mentally. The social aspect is really special too, I have friends from all over the world, a capoeira family in Italy and now one in Irela

nd too. Capoeira is more that just a sport or exercise, it has its own philosophy to it too. I love the weekend events, trainging so hard and meeting new teachers and students. Going back to Italy for big events and reuniting with my first capoeira family there give me great delight, as does meeting new people at events here in Ireland and expanding the capoeira social circle. The physical challenges that training poses are often difficult and it requires dedication and motivation to keep going and to improve. I’m a slow improver but capoeira also teaches me self acceptance.
Do you do any other sports?
I practice yoga regularly and I go running and hiking.
 How often do you train?
During the year, I train once or twice a week with our group. I try and go to as many events as I can

during the year, more recently that only amounts to 2 or 3 but they are invaluable. I occasionally train by myself but I find it much more enjoyable and effective to train with the group.
What’s a typical session like?
We greet each other, whoever arrives early plays some music or starts to warm up or practice something they are working on. When everyone has arrives, we all warm up together and practice some kicks and eschivas to warm up, before going on to practice some sequences individually or in pairs. We normally finish up with a roda and/or playing music and trying to learn capoeira songs.
What’s your favorite thing about Capoeira?
That’s a difficult question – I love the social aspect, the physical challenge of it and the high I feel after a training session or a weekend event.
