Garoto talking a little bit about capoeira

Garoto talking a little bit about capoeira
Garoto Capoeira
Why did you start Capoeira?
As I entered my 40s, I had decided it was time to take action and do something for ME; something that would captivate my interest and challenge me. Lots of clubs were on offer, but at the time many of them seemed so competitive. I was new to sports and the thought of entering a club where strangers were performing, at what I imagined were peak levels, was daunting. But, up for the challenge and with a “Go on. How far can you go, Ian?” mentality, I decided to look around. Having done some martial arts in my youth, and with encouragement from my family, I found Capoeira.
Why do you like Capoeira?
Like a kid at the first day at school, I attended my first Capoeira class. Kicks, handstands, acrobatics, songs… the (what looked like impossible) body movements and coordination blew me away…could I do this? Now, three and a half years later I find I have better strength, coordination and peace of mind with seemingly endless possibilities of how far I can physically and mentally push myself with being challenged and improving every week. Learning Capoeira songs and instruments, traveling across Europe to events and meeting like-minded people have been enlightening. My eight-year-old daughter joined Bob’s kids Capoeira class and absolutely loves it – the combination of music and gymnastic moves is a hit with her and her friends.

Do you do any other sports?
Capoeira gave me confidence and an “I can do” attitude. I started running, swimming and have even attempted a few triathlons. Capoeira started me on a fitness regime, all with a goal of self-improvement and a fresh perspective on pushing myself.  I now have a thirst for sport and life, and Capoeira fuels and enables me to do this.
How often do you train?
Classes are twice a week and outside this, my family endures as I train in the kitchen, practicing the moves and painfully (for them) learning new songs and instruments. When I’m not training I am thinking of Capoeira; the good times and also those times where I plateau and struggle. But I know as I keep training, I am improving.
 What’s a typical session like?
After greetings from friends and a great welcome to every session, we begin with a warm-up, stretches, kicks and then a sequence of movements. Instructor Bob shouts out the next set of movements (in Portuguese) and pushes us to improve our techniques and stamina, always with a cheeky grin.
What’s your favorite thing about Capoeira?
So many to mention; friends, fitness, fun. I think Capoeira always gives, and if you’re ready to receive, come and give it a try!
